* Ironman XC 70.3 Athlete of the Year

 

The 2011 Marines Ironman World Championship 70.3 featured 1515 qualifiers from 52 countries take to the water of Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nevada.  The new 70.3 Championship course proved to be a challenge for everyone except for Australia’s Craig Alexander who finished in 3:54:48 while fellow Australian Melissa Rollison set a blazing run pace to win the Pro Women’s Division in 4:20:55.  Ten Ironman Executive Challenge (XC) athletes were also among the field of competitors.

XC 46 and Over

Guy Berkebile of Somerset, Pennsylvania finished second overall on the challenging course in Henderson, Nevada with a stout time of 5:02:15.  Guy also had the fastest swim, bike and run splits (0:36:21, 2:36:43 and 1:43:48) in the 46 and over category. Pat Romano from Los Gatos, California claimed second in the division with a 5:45:18 and had the second fastest bike split of 2:56:02.  Coming in third was Great Britain’s Peter Harding with a time of 5:55:32.  Peter also had the second fastest swim (0:36:56) and run (2:03:11) split(s) of the division. Randy Christofferson of Greenville, Delaware rounded out the 46 and over division stating “This was the hardest course I have even raced” with a finishing time of 6:06:13.

 

XC 45 and Under

The 2011 Ironman Executive Challenge 70.3 Athlete of the Year Brian Weaver from Lexana, Kansas led the race from start to finish and set the run course on fire with a 1:38:14 and an overall finishing time of 4:48:43.  Miami, Florida’s John Marshall finished third overall and second in the division posting a 5:17:13 with the second fastest bike (2:46:49) and run (1:45:13) splits(s). Holger Pollmeier of Hovelhof, Germany claimed the third spot in the division with a time of 5:32:51.  Holger also had the division’s second fastest swim (0:34:59).  David Zucker of Austin, Texas took third in the division (5:37:33) along with the third fastest bike (2:54:19).  Mount Pleasant, South Carolina’s Robert Reuther posted a time of 5:44:43 and took fifth in the division.  Shaun Matisonn of Johannesburg, South Africa completed the challenging course in 6:24:05.
