XC 43 & UNDER
Ted Herget of Jonesboro, AR took 1st place in the XC 43 & Under division. Crossing the finish line in 9:35:40, Herget was able to take more than eight minutes off his PR, previously set at the Ford Ironman Florida in 2008 (9:44:16). In addition to setting a personal best, Ted also set the XC record for the fastest overall time; besting Jesper Clausen’s 9:57:58 at the Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship earlier this year.
By winning the XC 43 & Under division, Ted earned a slot to 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, HI. Being a true ambassador of the sport and having raced in Kona with XC in 2009, he felt strongly that other athletes should experience the Big Island. Per XC rules, the slot rolls down to the next fastest athlete within that division.
Taking 2nd place in the division and winning a Kona slot is John McGrath of Aurora, CO. With an 11:02:56, McGrath had an exceptional day besting his previous PR by more than forty-seven minutes (Ford Ironman Louisville – 2009). This will be John’s first trip to Kona to compete among the best triathletes in the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship.
Also competing in the XC 43 & Under division was Audra Lalley of Santa Monica, CA. In just her second full distance Ironman, Lalley posted a 12:26:28 and improved her PR by over thirty minutes (Ford Ironman Coeur d’Alene – 2009).
Rounding out the group was first-time Ironman Ryan Larrauri of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. One of seven international competitors, Larrauri completed the 140.6 mile course in 13:22:56. Ryan executed a consistent race with splits of 1:22:58 (swim), 6:05:54 (bike), and 5:37:34 (run).
XC 44-48
Luis Alvarez of Mexico City, Mexico took 1st place in the XC 44-48 division. Alvarez had a strong day across the board, posting splits of 1:06:55 (swim), 5:10:37 (bike), 3:54:02 (run). Perhaps more impressive than his 10:26:55 finish was the fact that this was the 70th time Luis crossed an Ironman finish line. His effort in Panama City Beach earned him his tenth trip to Kona (1991, 1993, 1994, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010) to compete at the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship.
Placing 2nd in the XC 44-48 division is James Baulderstone of Adelaide, Australia. Baulderstone’s official finish time of 10:55:33 was anchored by strong bike (5:28:00) and run (4:05:21) splits, but more importantly it reflected a PR improvement of over one hour and thirty-seven minutes. With this improvement, James was able to win the Kona PR Challenge and earn himself a slot to the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship.
Another new PR was set by Stefano Massa of Manitova, Italy. In addition to setting a new PR (Ironman Western Australia – 2006), Massa posted the fastest swim (1:02:46) of the group. Stefano wrapped up his day with a 5:27:38 bike and 4:18:03 run, for a finish time of 11:00:53.
Also competing in the division was Tatsuhiko Hoshina of Tokyo, Japan. The first-timer posted an impressive finish time of 11:01:44. Hoshina has strong swim (1:15:10) and bike (5:36:34) splits, but his day was anchored by the third fastest run split (3:48:40) of the entire group.
Wrapping up the XC 44-48 division was another first-timer Darryl Kellough of Tega Cay, SC. Kellough executed a consistent race day with splits of 1:27:29 (swim), 5:49:47 (bike), 6:16:28 (run).
XC 50 & OVER
Winning the group was Mark Holowesko of Nassau, Bahamas. Holowesko led the division wire to wire and finished with a time of 10:41:54. After completing the 2.4 mile swim course in 57:05 (fastest among all XC competitors), Mark went on the post a 5:06:05 bike split and run a 4:22:56 marathon. In addition to setting a new PR, his effort on race day earned him a trip to Kailua-Kona to compete in the 2011 Ford Ironman World Championship.
Hot on Mark’s heels was Carl Wernicke of Riverside, CT. In the closest XC race to date, Wernicke finished just three seconds behind the leader and posted an official finish time and new PR of 10:41:57. After a 1:07:56 swim and a 5:36:34 bike, Carl ended his day with a 3:42:13 marathon; the second fasted of the entire XC group.
Finishing third in the XC 50 & Over division was Pierluca Pasquali of Bologna, Italy. The XC veteran (Arizona ’09, New Orleans ’10, Florida ’10) had a consistent swim (1:15:02), bike (5:48:30), and run (6:09:02) splits.
