The inaugural year of Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca proved to be a spectacular event. Over 1900 athletes from 47 countries battled the course that for decades has been the training ground for many European triathletes as well Professional cycling teams. Germany’s Andreas Raelert fought off two French athletes (Bertrand Billard and Sylvain Sudrie ) to win the men’s race. Britain’s Emma-Kate Lidbury took the title for the women with Erica Csomor from Hungary and Silvia Felt from Germany completing the top three.
Five Ironman Executive Challenge (XC) athletes competed in the event with four representing the United States and one representing Romania. Guy Berkebile (Somerset, PA) crossed the line first for the XC group. Guy posted the fastest bike split of 2:42:12 on what he described as an “epic” bike course. Next across the line was David Zucker (Austin, TX). Zucker’s run of 1:49:06, fastest of the XC group, and consistent day at all three disciplines helped him finish the race second overall and a mere 40 seconds behind Berkebile. Tom Ripley (Annapolis, MD) finished third amongst the Ironman XC group. Ripley had the fastest swim split with a 28:30. Rounding out the foursome from the United States was Jeff Jones from Albany, Texas. Jones posted the second fastest run of the day, a 1:49:13. Next across the line was Steven van Groningen of Bucharest, Romania. Van Groningen completed the challenging bike course in 2:44:27, second fastest of the XC group. Van Groningen will compete in the Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship with Executive Challenge later this summer.
The World Triathlon Corporation and Ironman XC would like to graciously thank Andreas Raelert for being involved in the XC program at the 2011 Thomas Cook Ironman 70.3 Mallorca event.
