Close to two thousand athletes participated in this year’s Powerbar Ironman 70.3 Switzerland. Nearly half of the athletes were from Switzerland – with Germany, Great Britain and France bringing the next largest groups to the event. Caroline Steffen of Switzerland won the women’s Professional race and Germany’s Andi B. Cherer claimed the men’s title.
American Chris Miller was the first of the Ironman Executive Challenge (XC) group to cross the finish line. Miller posted the fastest bike (2:48) and run (1:44) among the XC athletes, earning him a slot to the Ford Ironman World Championship this October. Next to cross the line was Germany’s Holger Pollmeier. Pollmeier’s swim split of 33:35 was the best of the XC athletes and helped earn him a slot to the Marines Ironman 70.3 World Championship this September in Las Vegas, Nevada. Less than one minute behind Pollmeier was Peter Harding of the United Kingdom. Harding used the Switzerland event as a warm up for the 2011 Frankfurter Sparkasse Ironman European Championship, which he will be competing in this July as an XC athlete. American Dan Ederer and Shaun Matisonn from the Republic of South Africa rounded out the XC group. Both posted consistent times across all three disciplines on what proved to be a challenging course. Matisonn also will be competing at the Marines Ironman 70.3 World Championship this September along with Harding.
The World Triathlon Corporation and Ironman XC would like to thank Caroline Steffan, Meike Krebs and Matthias Hecht for their involvement in the XC program at the 2011 PowerBar Ironman 70.3 Switzerland.
