2012 Ironman XC Full-Distance Events

World Championship (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii)

Slot Distribution Procedures

XC Age Division Slot - A minimum of one (1) Ironman World Championship slot will be awarded to each XC Age Division.

  • Based on the ages of participants in each Ironman XC Series event, Ironman will establish customized age divisions to determine the distribution of Kona slots; a minimum of two (2) age groups will be created at each full distance XC Series Event in 2012.

  • The Ironman XC customized age groups may differ from standard five-year range typical of Ironman events.

  • In the event an age group consists of more than six (6) participants, an additional Kona slot will be added, totaling two (2) slots for that group; the second slot will be awarded to the second place finisher of that age group.

PR Challenge Slot - One (1) additional  Ironman World Championship slot will be awarded at each full-distance Ironman XC Series Event in 2012 to the athlete with the Most Improved Personal Record.
  • To be eligible, XC athletes must submit documentation displaying official finish times for two (2)  full-distance Ironman events; of which one time must be the athlete’s PR from an event within six (6) years prior to the upcoming Ironman XC event date.

  • Since courses differ in degree of difficulty, races will be handicapped and PR times will be adjusted accordingly.

  • Improvements in PR times will be calculated on a percentile basis.

  • Effective January 1st of 2011, an XC athlete can only win a PR Challenge Slot one time.

*Note: World Championship Slots are non transferable and may not be deferred to another year. Those athletes who win a slot must participate at the XC Series’ World Championship package and compete for the title of Ironman XC Series’ Athlete of the Year.

*Note: In the event an athlete wins both an Age Division slot and the PR Challenge slot, they will be awarded the PR Challenge slot and the Age Division slot will roll down in that age group.

*Note: Ironman reserves the right to modify the roll-down procedure for XC World Championship slots.

*Note: XC athletes at full distance events will still compete within their traditional age group and are still eligible for standard age group awards.

2012 Ironman XC 70.3 Events

70.3 World Championship (Lake Las Vegas, Nevada)

Slot Distribution Procedures

XC Age Division Slot(s) – A minimum of two (2) XC Age Divisions will be established for each Ironman 70.3 XC Series Event in 2012, with the opportunity to win one of multiple Ironman 70.3 World Championship slots outlined below.

  • An Age Division consisting of three (3) or more athletes will award two (2) Ironman 70.3 World Championship slots (to 1st Place and 2nd Place) within that grouping.

  • An Age Division consisting of less than three (3) athletes will award one (1) Ironman 70.3 World Championship slot to 1st Place only.

  • Based on the ages of participants in each Ironman XC Series event, Ironman will establish customized age divisions to determine the distribution of Ironman 70.3 World Championship slots.

  • The Ironman XC customized age divisions may differ from standard five-year range typical of Ironman events.

PR Challenge Slot - One (1) additional Ironman 70.3 World Championship slot will be awarded at each Ironman 70.3 XC Series Event in 2012 to the athlete with the Most Improved Personal Record.

  • In order to be eligible for this slot, athletes must submit documentation of official finish times for at least three (3) Ironman 70.3 events, one of which is their PR.

  • Improvements in PR times will be calculated on a percentile basis.

  • 70.3 race venues will NOT be handicapped.

  • Effective January 1st of 2011, an XC athlete can only win a 70.3 PR Challenge Slot one time.

*Note: Ironman XC Athletes will race head-to-head in an XC swim wave and are therefore removed from age group swim starts and become ineligible for standard Age-Group awards/slots.

*Note: Winners of XC Age Division Slot(s) are ineligible for the PR Challenge slot.

*Note: In the event there is no 70.3 PR Challenge winner, The Ironman 70.3 World Championship slot will be allocated to the Age Division that has the largest grouping of athletes.

*Note: World Championship Slots are non-transferable and may not be deferred to another year. Those athletes who win a slot must participate at the XC Series’ World Championship package and compete for the title of Ironman XC Series’ 70.3 Athlete of the Year.

*Note: Ironman reserves the right to modify the roll-down procedure for XC World Championship slots.
