Kona Slots
2012 Ironman XC Full-Distance Events
World Championship (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii)
Slot Distribution Procedures
XC Age Division Slot - A minimum of one (1) Ironman World Championship slot will be awarded to each XC Age Division.
- Based on the ages of participants in each Ironman XC Series event, Ironman will establish customized age divisions to determine the distribution of Kona slots; a minimum of two (2) age groups will be created at each full distance XC Series Event in 2012.
- The Ironman XC customized age groups may differ from standard five-year range typical of Ironman events.
- In the event an age group consists of more than six (6) participants, an additional Kona slot will be added, totaling two (2) slots for that group; the second slot will be awarded to the second place finisher of that age group.

PR Challenge Slot - One (1) additional Ironman World Championship slot will be awarded at each full-distance Ironman XC Series Event in 2012 to the athlete with the Most Improved Personal Record.
- To be eligible, XC athletes must submit documentation displaying official finish times for two (2) full-distance Ironman events; of which one time must be the athlete’s PR from an event within six (6) years prior to the upcoming Ironman XC event date.
- Since courses differ in degree of difficulty, races will be handicapped and PR times will be adjusted accordingly.
- Improvements in PR times will be calculated on a percentile basis.
- Effective January 1st of 2011, an XC athlete can only win a PR Challenge Slot one time.
*Note: World Championship Slots are non transferable and may not be deferred to another year. Those athletes who win a slot must participate at the XC Series’ World Championship package and compete for the title of Ironman XC Series’ Athlete of the Year.
*Note: In the event an athlete wins both an Age Division slot and the PR Challenge slot, they will be awarded the PR Challenge slot and the Age Division slot will roll down in that age group.
*Note: Ironman reserves the right to modify the roll-down procedure for XC World Championship slots.
*Note: XC athletes at full distance events will still compete within their traditional age group and are still eligible for standard age group awards.
